Too Invested?

So tonight I cried about a close friend dying. Don’t feel sorry about me, a close friend of mine hasn’t died. An NPC friend of my roleplaying character Suzanne has.

I was taken by surprise as to how much I am invested in this character, I mean I knew I was, but when I heard that Larry, Suzanne’s bodyguard, was dead, as in beyond repair (he’s a clockwork) I felt her world being rocked. I felt the ground fall out from beneath her feet.

I can’t believe I actually cried.

I can’t believe how much I am going to miss Larry.

It was a very intense roleplaying session tonight/today/whenever. We got very into character, or at least I did. Suzanne can be very cold at times. She got badly beaten up again tonight. Heading off to Chicago General after M-i-L freaked her the fuck out.

  2. Nice one!

You just don’t appreciate the potential of rpgs until you’ve cried in one.

I would never have believed I would shed tears for that crazy wookie, but we’d been through a lot together by the time he saved my life by sacrificing his own.

  3. You’ve all been scarily invested lately, which is why this plot line has worked so well, but the end was never going to be easy.

  4. I dunno, but at least the wookie made his own choice. Larry kinda didn’t.

Snow. Suzanne has plans. You want to be free of Christine? Fine. You will be. So will she.

  5. No worse (in fact far more understandable) than crying while watching a film or reading a book. A good game, like a good film, draws you into its reality, all the more so because you are an actor in that reality.

  6. I think Jo’s hit the nail on the head there – the emotional intensity of a roleplaying game (and similarly the mindless escapism of an action movie-style game or the chills of a horror game) are the same as what you experience when watching a film or reading a book.

Or playing a video game, I’d like to add to that list.

Suzanne is escapism, and provided you keep writing Mish’s blog here, rather than Suzanne’s, we won’t get you sectioned.
